What is a half-height wall, and what is it good for?
A half-height wall (also called a pony wall) doesn't reach the ceiling — typically 90-120 cm tall. It divides a room visually without shutting out light and air.
Short answer: A half-height wall (also called a pony wall or knee wall) is a wall that stops some way below the ceiling — typically at 90-120 cm, roughly table height or a bit above. It's used to divide a large room without blocking light, air and sightlines: between kitchen and dining area, as a backrest behind a sofa, alongside a staircase, or as a screen for a hallway. A half-height wall is almost never load-bearing, but that still has to be confirmed by a professional if it's replacing an existing wall. What a half-height wall is
A half-height wall is built like an ordinary wall — usually a timber or steel frame clad in plasterboard, or a masonry wall — that simply isn't carried all the way up. It ends in mid-air with a finished top edge, often with a cap or a timber trim along the top. Everything above the half-height wall stays open to the ceiling.
The term is used a little loosely. Some people also call a wall that only projects partway into the room a half-height wall — a stub of wall sticking out from a cross wall, leaving an opening beside it. Both versions do the same job: marking a boundary without closing the room off.
The typical height sits between 90 and 120 cm. That isn't arbitrary: 90 cm is standard worktop height in a kitchen (usually 90-92 cm including the worktop), and 100-110 cm is the height at which you can't see over the edge standing up, but can easily talk across it.
The six places a half-height wall makes the most sense
- Between kitchen and dining area. The classic. The half-height wall hides the clutter on the kitchen counter without shutting the cook into their own room. Built at 90-92 cm, it can carry a worktop that overhangs 25-30 cm on the dining side and doubles as a breakfast bar.
- Behind a sofa in a large room. A half-height wall at 90-100 cm gives the sofa a back, so the seating area doesn't float in the middle of an open space. It can also hide wiring and hold sockets.
- Alongside a staircase or stairwell. Here the half-height wall is often a requirement, not a style choice: an open edge above a drop to a lower floor needs a guard. The required guard height at a floor edge is set by local authorities and varies from country to country — check with the authorities or your contractor rather than picking a height because it looks right.
- As a hallway screen. A half-height wall 120-160 cm from the front door means you don't look straight into the living room when the door opens — without turning the hallway into a dark corridor.
- In the bathroom. A half-height wall between the toilet and a shower recess, or between the shower recess and the rest of the room, gives shelter without making a small bathroom feel claustrophobic.
- As cover for services. The most practical reason of all: a half-height wall can hide soil stacks, the drain from a wall-hung toilet, ventilation ducting or wiring that would otherwise have to run exposed.
What a half-height wall can NOT do
It's worth being clear about what you give up when you choose a half-height wall over a full one:
- Sound. A half-height wall damps next to nothing. Sound travels straight over the top. If two functions need to be separated acoustically — a home office or a bedroom — a half-height wall won't do it. A full wall with insulation in the frame makes an audible difference; a half-height wall doesn't.
- Smell and steam. Cooking smells from a kitchen aren't stopped by a half-height wall. If you want to stop the living room smelling of fried fish, that's a job for the extractor hood and ventilation — not the wall.
- Load-bearing function. A half-height wall doesn't carry the floor above, because it doesn't reach it. So if you remove an existing wall and put a half-height wall in its place, you have effectively removed a wall — with everything that implies if the old wall was carrying load. Whether it was can only be decided by a building surveyor or a structural engineer, and any work on a load-bearing wall must be approved by the authorities before it starts.
- Privacy at height. From a first floor or a staircase, you can look straight down over a half-height wall. In a house with an open connection between floors, the half-height wall is only a boundary at eye level.
The half-height wall's measurements — the figures you need to decide
There are four figures, and they should be on the drawing before anyone orders materials:
- The height. 90-92 cm if it needs to line up with a kitchen worktop. 100-110 cm if it needs to hide clutter at normal standing height. Above 130 cm it starts to read as a full wall that's been cut short, and below 80 cm it reads as a piece of furniture.
- The thickness. A light half-height wall in a timber frame with plasterboard on both sides typically comes to 10-13 cm. If it needs to hide a drain pipe, plan for 15-20 cm. If it needs to carry an overhanging worktop, 12 cm is a sensible minimum.
- The length — and above all the opening beside it. It's rarely the half-height wall itself that decides how the room works; it's the passage it leaves. Plan for at least 90 cm of clear passage, and preferably 100-120 cm if two people need to pass each other carrying a pot.
- The overhang on top. If a cap is going on, decide how far it projects on each side. 3-5 cm gives a neat shadow line; 25-30 cm gives a breakfast bar with room for legs.
Worked example: a room is 5.40 m wide. You want a half-height wall against the kitchen and a passage past it. A half-height wall of 3.00 m plus a passage of 1.00 m takes up 4.00 m — leaving 5.40 − 4.00 = 1.40 m for a cupboard or a wider passage. That's the sum that decides whether a half-height wall works, and it can be done on the drawing long before anyone buys a sheet of plasterboard.
How to draw the half-height wall before you build it
A half-height wall is easy to build and hard to undo: it's fixed to the floor, and the floor has to be repaired if it's moved. That makes it one of the changes that pays off best to test on paper first.
