Why rooms scanned separately can't just be "glued together"
A single room is scanned in its own small coordinate system — an internal "zero point" the scanner sets itself when it starts. Scan the living room on its own and the bedroom on its own, closing the app completely in between, and you get two drawings that may each be perfectly correct on their own but have no idea where they sit relative to each other. It's like having two maps of two towns without knowing which direction one town lies from the other. The software can't guess the relationship afterwards — it has to be known from the scan itself.
How the phone keeps track of itself between rooms
The technique is called "visual-inertial odometry" — the phone combines the camera's images with motion data from the accelerometer and gyroscope to constantly know how far, and in which direction, it has moved since it started. - Moving the phone too fast through a doorway or corner, so the image sequence "jumps" instead of gliding.
- Setting the phone down mid-scan and picking it up again somewhere else, without the movement between the two spots having been recorded.
Plan a route before you start
Think about the route before you press start, much as you'd plan a walk through a museum: begin in one corner of the home, and move systematically on to the next adjoining room, without having to cross an already-scanned area unnecessarily many times. Avoid jumping back and forth between floors or distant rooms — the more continuous the route, the lower the risk of the tracking losing the thread along the way.
The passage between two rooms is the vulnerable moment
It's not usually the rooms themselves that cause trouble — it's the threshold between them. A doorway is often a narrow, brief camera view with little to hold on to (a flat wall, a door frame), and that's exactly where the tracking has the least to work with. Move slowly through doorways, and avoid turning the phone sharply while passing through. A couple of extra seconds of patience at the transition often saves the rest of the tour.
Do you have to scan every room in one go?
The short answer is: yes, if you want them merged automatically into a single drawing. But that's not an all-or-nothing choice for the whole project — most apps let you pause the scan between rooms, save progress, and continue later the same day, as long as the tracking isn't lost along the way. What you should avoid is assuming you can scan the living room today and the bedroom next week and expect the two to line up automatically — that requires either one continuous scan or manual correction afterwards.
What if a room simply can't be reached during the tour?
Some rooms can't be included in a continuous walkthrough — an outbuilding with no indoor connection, an attic only reachable via an outdoor ladder, or a basement room you only discover you're missing after you've moved on. Here the usual solution is to scan the missing room separately and place it manually in the drawing afterwards, based on your own measurements. It's less precise than automatic merging, but far better than leaving the room out entirely.
Draw instead of scanning, if a room is difficult
If a room is full of mirrors, glass or reflective surfaces, that can disrupt both the room recognition itself and the tracking between rooms. In cases like that, it's often faster and more reliable to measure the room with a tape measure and draw it in manually than to fight a scan that won't cooperate. A mixed approach — scan what will scan, draw the rest — is entirely normal practice, not a fallback.
Checklist before starting a whole-house scan
- Tidy the messiest rooms first — fewer objects on the floor means fewer misread surfaces.
- Turn the lights on everywhere. Good lighting gives the camera more fixed points to track against.
- Plan the route as one continuous walk through the home, without unnecessary jumps.
- Walk slowly through every doorway — this is where the tracking is most vulnerable.
