How do I find out if there is wiring or pipes in a wall?
Use a detector, and read the wall from where the sockets, switches, radiators and taps sit โ including on the other side of it.
Short answer: Three things together give a reliable picture: (1) a detector (cheap models find metal and timber; better models also find live wiring), (2) the logic of how installations are routed โ wiring typically runs vertically and horizontally from sockets and switches, never diagonally, and (3) what you can see on both sides of the wall and on the floor above and below. If there is a radiator, a tap, a toilet or a kitchen against the wall, there is a pipe in or near it. If in doubt, do not drill โ call in a professional. Live wiring in a wall is dangerous, and a pierced water pipe can wreck a floor within hours.
Why it is worth knowing before you touch the wall
Whether you are hanging a heavy cabinet, cutting a test hole to see what the wall is made of, or taking it down entirely, the services are the item that most often turns a small project into a big one. A socket that has to move needs new wiring, a new hole, a new box and a repair to the wall afterwards โ and the work has to be carried out by a qualified electrician. A water pipe or a drain that has to be rerouted is even more expensive, because drains need a fall and therefore often drag the floor, the walls and a whole wet room along with them.
And it is not just about money: drilling into a live wire is dangerous, and a pierced pipe inside a wall can sit dripping unnoticed behind the plasterboard for weeks.
Method 1: Read the wall from what you can see
Before you buy any tools, spend ten minutes just looking. Services are not placed at random:
- Wiring runs vertically and horizontally, never diagonally. From a socket or a switch, the cable typically runs straight up or down and then across โ often along a band near the ceiling, near the floor, or at a fixed height. So never drill directly above, below or level with a box.
- Look at BOTH sides of the wall. This is the one people forget. A socket in the room next door often sits in the same cavity as the one you can see โ and there is cable running between them.
- Look at the floor above and below. A socket directly above or below the spot you want to drill means a vertical run probably passes through the wall there.
- Radiators mean pipes. Either the pipes come up through the floor right next to the radiator, or they run in or along the wall. Follow them with your eyes as far as you can see.
- Water and drains follow wet rooms and kitchens. If there is a bathroom, a utility room, a toilet or a kitchen sink on the other side of the wall โ or directly above โ there are pipes. A wall-hung toilet also means a concealed cistern, which takes up 15-20 cm of the wall's depth.
- Soil stacks run vertically through the house, typically boxed in or in a noticeably thicker piece of wall, usually in the same spot on every floor. An unexplainably thick stretch of wall is often a shaft.
Method 2: The detector โ and what it can actually do
A handheld detector is one of the cheapest tools in the whole project. It is worth knowing what the three types can do:
- Magnetic stud finder (the simplest type): finds screws and nails in plasterboard, and so the studs behind them. Does not find wiring and does not find plastic pipes.
- Electronic multi-detector: finds metal, often timber, and typically has a mode for live wiring โ which only works when the cable is carrying current. This is the one most people should have.
- Professional scanner: can find reinforcement bars, pipes and cables deeper in and with better precision. Typically used by professionals.
The four limits you need to know:
- Cables that are not live will not be picked up by the live-wire mode. Do NOT switch the circuit off while you scan โ scan first with the power on, then switch it off before you drill.
- Plastic pipes with no water in them often give no reading at all. An empty PEX pipe or an empty drain is practically invisible.
- Depth is limited. Typically 3-8 cm on ordinary models. A service running through the middle of a 25 cm masonry wall will not be found.
- Damp, metal foil in insulation, and reinforcement mesh give false readings. If you get a reading across the whole wall, it is not because there is wiring everywhere.
Practical use: calibrate the detector somewhere you are certain there is nothing, run it slowly across the wall at several heights, mark every reading in pencil, then run it vertically. Once the marks line up, you are looking at the actual runs. Isolated dots are usually just screws.
Method 3: Switch off the circuit and test
The last check before drilling somewhere you are unsure about: work out which circuit feeds the sockets in or near the wall. Switch that circuit off at the consumer unit, and use a voltage tester to confirm the sockets are actually dead.
That does not remove the risk entirely โ there could be a cable from a different circuit running through the same wall โ but it removes the most likely one. If the wall is close to a bathroom, a kitchen or the consumer unit itself, do not drill it yourself. There are too many runs through it.
Taking the wall down? Find the services first
When a wall is coming out, the question is not "where am I allowed to drill?" but "what needs to be moved, and what will it cost?". That is a line item that belongs on the quote, and it gets more expensive if it is discovered partway through the job.
So make a count before you ask for quotes:
- The number of sockets, switches and light fittings in the wall โ on both sides.
- Whether there is a radiator on the wall, and where its pipes come from.
- Whether there is water or a drain in the wall (a kitchen, bathroom or utility room on the other side).
- Whether there is underfloor heating in the floor next to the wall โ its pipes sit in the screed and get exposed when the wall's chase is repaired.
- Whether ventilation ducting or a cooker-hood extract runs in or above the wall.
Write the list down together with the wall's measurements โ length, thickness and room height โ so the contractor can price it. A list with figures produces a quote that holds; a description in prose produces a buffer.

And the thing no detector can find
A detector can help you avoid drilling into something. It cannot tell you whether the wall is load-bearing. That depends on what sits above the wall and how the load travels down through the house โ and that is a structural assessment that has to be made on site by a building surveyor or a structural engineer. Breaking through a load-bearing wall also needs approval from the authorities before work starts.
So: the detector finds the wire. The engineer decides the load path. The app measures the wall. None of the three can do the others' job.
