How do I choose the floor pattern and direction on a floor plan?

Planks, herringbone or tiles — and which way they run — is not just cosmetic. The direction affects how much wastage you get, how the room feels, and how much work goes into laying it.

Short answer: the three common floor patterns are planks (laid parallel in one direction), herringbone (short pieces in an angled zigzag pattern) and tiles (square or rectangular panels, often laid straight or on the diagonal). As a general rule, plank direction should follow the incoming light or the room's longest axis — but there are exceptions. A digital floor plan that can show pattern and direction in 3D makes it easier to see what the choice actually looks like before you order the material.

Why does floor direction matter at all?

A floor laid the wrong way doesn't look wrong in any way you could point to — but the room feels different. Planks that follow the room's longest axis reinforce the sense that the room is long and open. Planks running across the longest axis make a narrow room feel even narrower, because the eye follows the boards and notices how short the distance is from side to side. It's an optical effect, not a physical one — the floor takes up the same space either way — but it's real enough that professional floor fitters ask about a room's shape before recommending a direction.

Planks: which way should they run?

The three rules don't always point the same way, and when they conflict there's no single right answer — it's a matter of taste, where light usually carries the most weight in a room where it swings a lot over the course of the day.

What is herringbone, and when does it make sense?

Herringbone is short, identical boards laid in a zigzag pattern with a 90-degree angle between each pair. The pattern doesn't follow a single direction the way planks do — it fills the room with a repeated geometric pattern that's often felt to be more formal or classic. Herringbone typically takes more time to lay than ordinary planks, because every piece has to be cut and fitted to an angle, and more material is wasted along the way — how much depends on the room's shape and how many corners and recesses need fitting around.

In return, a herringbone pattern hides it better if a room isn't quite square: the eye finds it harder to notice that a wall isn't perfectly straight when the floor is already full of changing angles.

Tiles: straight or diagonal?

Square or rectangular tiles are laid either parallel to the walls or rotated 45 degrees (diagonally). Laying diagonally can make a small room feel larger, because the eye follows the angled lines further out towards the corners — the same optical principle as with planks, just rotated a quarter turn. The price is more wastage at the edges: every tile that meets a wall diagonally has to be cut, and that typically produces more waste than a straight layout, where only the outermost rows need cutting.

What does "rotation in degrees" actually mean?

Most floor patterns can be rotated by any number of degrees relative to the room's walls — not just 0 or 45. That matters in two situations: first, when the room isn't quite square and you want the pattern to follow one particular wall rather than another. Second, when you want to match an existing look — for example a floor that already runs in an adjoining room, which the new floor needs to line up with across a door threshold.

How does pattern relate to material wastage?

The more cutting a pattern requires at corners and along edges, the more wastage. The order from least to most waste is typically: straight planks parallel to the most obvious wall, then diagonal laying, and finally herringbone, which almost always requires the most cutting, because every single piece meets an angle. If you need to work out how much extra material to buy beyond the plain floor area, herringbone is the pattern that most often needs the biggest buffer.

Can you see the pattern in 3D before you order?

Yes, if your floor-plan app supports it. The advantage of seeing pattern and colour choice in a 3D model of the actual room — with the real measurements and the real windows — is that you can judge how the light hits the floor at that particular address, instead of imagining it from a generic sample at the building supplies store. It's still an illustration, not a guarantee of the exact shade — screens and lighting render colours differently — but direction and pattern can be judged accurately, because they're geometry, not colour rendering.

What if the room isn't square?

In a room with a skewed wall or a sloped wall, there's no single "right" direction — the pattern will always meet at least one wall at a different angle from the rest. The choice here is about which wall you want to prioritise following neatly, and accepting that the rest will need more cutting. The wall you see first when entering the room is often a sensible one to align the pattern to.
