Can you look down into the house from above in a 3D model?

The so-called dollhouse view — where the roof and ceilings are hidden so you look straight down into the rooms — is one of the most used features in home viewers. It only requires switching one thing off: the ceiling.

Short answer: Yes, most 3D home models can be shown as a "dollhouse" — the ceilings are hidden, the camera looks down, and you see the whole floor plan at once, just like a real dollhouse without a roof. All it takes is for the app to be able to switch the ceiling layer on and off. Note that the ceiling height in this kind of model is usually estimated, not scanned — whether you are looking from above or from inside.

What is a dollhouse view?

The name comes from the impression it gives: a dollhouse has no roof, so you can look straight down into every room at once and move the furniture around with your fingers. In a digital 3D model, the same effect is achieved by making the ceilings invisible and placing the camera high up, looking straight down or at an angle. At the same time you see the whole footprint, where the walls sit and how the rooms connect — something an ordinary two-dimensional floor plan does not show quite as intuitively for most people.

Why is that view so popular in home marketing?

Is the ceiling scanned when this kind of model is made?

No, usually not. Most home scans, regardless of technology, struggle to capture the ceiling accurately — it sits far from the camera, often with no distinct detail to measure against, and a scanner focused on walls and furniture at eye level rarely gathers precise data up there. That is why the ceiling height in the vast majority of 3D home models is estimated from other measured points, not scanned directly. That holds whether you view the house from inside or from above in dollhouse view.

That does not mean the figure is arbitrary — a good estimated ceiling height is built from the wall points that were actually measured, and it usually lands close to reality in ordinary rooms with straight walls. But in a room with a sloped wall, an alcove or an uneven ceiling, you should not blindly trust the estimated figure without measuring it yourself.

It shows a simplified, clean version of the building — not the wallpaper, the wear, or the things that actually take up space in a room, the way a photo-realistic scan would. Nor can it reveal structural details that are not part of the underlying model, such as wiring, pipework, or whether a wall is load-bearing. And because the ceiling itself is not precisely scanned, you should not use the dollhouse view to judge the exact ceiling height in a particular room — only to understand the layout as a whole.

How does it differ from an ordinary floor plan seen from above?

A 2D floor plan seen from above is already a kind of "dollhouse" without the three dimensions. The difference is that a 3D dollhouse view shows walls with real height, doors and windows as openings in a surface rather than lines, and lets you tilt and rotate the camera to see the depth of the rooms. For some, a flat floor plan is enough — for others, the extra dimension makes it easier to grasp the proportions of the rooms without having to learn to read a technical drawing.

Can you combine the dollhouse view with a cross-section through the house?

In some more advanced viewers you can go a step further than removing the ceiling, and instead slice a whole section away from the house so you see a cross-section — like looking into a house where the front has been cut off. That is useful for understanding how floors connect vertically, and where knee walls and sloped ceilings sit relative to each other across several storeys. Not every program offers it, because it requires the whole building's geometry to be known as closed volumes, not just surfaces — but the principle is the same as in the dollhouse view: you remove whatever is in the way of the view, without changing the building itself.

Why is the dollhouse view especially useful for multi-storey homes?

In a home with several storeys, it is often hard to remember or picture exactly how the first and second floors sit on top of one another when you have only seen each floor separately in individual floor plans. A dollhouse view that can show one storey at a time, or stack them transparently on top of each other, makes it possible to see at once whether, say, a bathroom upstairs sits above the kitchen downstairs — a detail with practical consequences for pipework, but one that is hard to read from two separate 2D drawings.
