Why is one wall a little skewed after a scan?
A measured wall that is actually straight rarely comes out as a perfectly straight line. Here is why measuring noise skews walls on the drawing, when it is worth correcting, and what it does to the floor area.
Short answer: a skewed wall on a scanned floor plan is usually not a skewed wall in reality — it is measuring noise. The sensor has picked up points with a small spread, and when those points are turned into a straight line, the line inherits that spread as a faint tilt. The fix is to align the wall's angle with a neighbouring wall it is actually parallel or perpendicular to in real life — without changing the measurements you already know must stay fixed. The effect on the floor area is usually very small, but not zero, and it is worth understanding why before you tap "align".
Why does a straight wall become skewed on the drawing at all?
A digital floor plan is usually created in one of two ways: a scanner (LiDAR or camera) collects thousands of points across the wall's surface, or you measure by hand with a tape or a laser and type the numbers in yourself. Both routes carry a margin of error. The scanner never hits exactly the same surface twice — a plastered wall has irregularities at the millimetre level, the light varies, and the points scatter slightly around the true surface.
When software then finds "the best straight line" through those points, the line ends up at whatever angle fits the points as a whole best — not necessarily the angle the wall actually has. If the scatter happens to lean one way at one end of the wall, because a box was in the way or the light fell badly there, the line tilts a fraction. The result: a wall that is genuinely 90 degrees to the room next door ends up as 89.4 degrees on the drawing.
Is this a problem, or just cosmetic?
It depends what the drawing is for. If it is meant to show "roughly what the home looks like" to a buyer or a friend, half a degree of deviation is invisible to the eye and makes no difference. But if the drawing is exported to a CAD file that a contractor or an architect will draw on top of, that small skew becomes visible: a row of walls that should line up kinks a fraction, and a floor that should be square ends up with a corner that isn't quite 90 degrees.
The practical problem is rarely the floor area itself — it is walls that should line up not lining up. The eye catches it instantly on a printed drawing, even when the deviation is too small to measure with a tape.
What does an "align to neighbouring wall" function actually do?
The principle is simple: you select the skewed wall, and the app corrects its angle so it becomes parallel or perpendicular to a neighbouring wall you point at — typically a shared wall with the room next door, which is in reality the same physical wall and should therefore have the same angle in both rooms. What changes is the angle. The wall's length and the measurements you have typed in yourself, or that came from the scan, are untouched by the function, unless the angle correction forces a corner to shift slightly to stay connected to the rest of the room.
It is therefore a local correction — it aligns one wall against one reference, not the whole house at once. If several walls are skewed in different directions, you need to correct them one at a time, and you should choose the reference with care: a shared wall to a room you are confident is straight is a better reference than an exterior wall you have not verified yourself.
Does it change the floor area?
Yes, but typically only by a few square centimetres to a few square decimetres — not something that moves a room's area from 14.2 to 14.5 m². An angle correction of under one degree over a wall run of 4–5 metres shifts the end of the wall by a few millimetres, rarely more than 5–8 cm. The knock-on effect on the area is of the same small order: a fraction of a percent. If you need an area for an official record or a sale, it is still the originally measured area you should stand by — not whatever comes out after a visual tidy-up of the drawing.
When should you NOT align a wall?
Some houses are genuinely skewed. Older houses built in stages, extensions added at a different angle from the original, and houses fitted to an irregular plot have real angles that deviate from 90 degrees. If you align such a wall to a neighbour, you are not "fixing" an error — you are introducing one, because the drawing now lies about the house's actual shape.
The rule of thumb: use the function when you have a concrete reason to believe the deviation is measuring noise — for instance, that two rooms sharing a wall show two different angles for what is physically the same wall. If, on the other hand, you have a sense that the house is simply built that way, leave it be. A drawing that is a little "ugly" but honest is better than a tidy drawing that lies about the house's shape.
How to check yourself whether a skew is an error or reality
- Measure the room's diagonals. If a room is square, its two diagonals are the same length. A noticeable difference — more than a few centimetres in an ordinary room — points to a genuinely skewed corner, not measuring noise.
- Compare the same wall from both rooms. A shared wall should have the same angle in both rooms' drawings. If it doesn't, it is usually measuring noise in one or both scans.
- Look at the house from outside. If an exterior wall clearly follows a different direction from the rest of the façade — at an extension, say — the skew is probably real.
Other sources of skew in a scan
Angle errors do not only come from the sensor itself. Move the phone too fast during a scan, and the tracking of where the phone is in the room can drift slightly — that pulls the whole wall skewed, not just a single point. Shiny, reflective surfaces such as glass and glossy tiles confuse some sensor types and can produce points that don't sit where the surface actually is. And furniture covering a large part of a wall leaves the scanner with fewer points to work out the straight line from — fewer points, more uncertainty on the angle.
What if you draw without a scanner?
If you draw the home by hand — with a tape measure and a drawing app, or on paper — this particular kind of skew arises less often, because you decide the angle yourself as you draw. The risk instead is different: assuming 90 degrees where the wall in reality isn't. If you can, measure the diagonals in each room while you are standing there with the tape — it is the cheapest way to catch a genuinely skewed corner, long before you sit down at the drawing afterwards.

If there is any doubt about whether a skewed wall relates to something load-bearing or structural, that is still a job for a building surveyor — a floor plan, however neatly it has been straightened, says nothing about what holds the house up.
